Of graphics designers and men

As I mentioned at C4[2], I’m working on my company’s first product, which is an iPhone application. I’ve gotten to the point where I need a graphics designer and one those sound creator type people (sorry, I don’t know their professional title).
My app is a game, so in addition to an application icon, I also need avatars for players and some game backgrounds (like wallpaper), among other things. Basically, I’m looking for recommendations here. Anyone have someone they’ve worked with and really liked?
I also need sound effects, which I’m pretty lost on. I mean, if I ever need a twoosh sound, I know who to go to, but for more complex sounds, I’m just don’t know. For those of you who have done games, who did your sound effects?
After I get some real artwork into the game, I’ll see about posting screenshots and whatnot.

I’ve had great results for icon and game artwork with Jordan Langille at OneToad Design. The minimal sound effects I’ve needed so far for my project I got from the royalty-free collection at Soundrangers, but that might not be sufficient for anything beyond simple click and swoosh sounds. They do appear to offer custom sound design services as well.

‘graphics creator type people’ = ‘graphics designer’
then
’sound creator type people’ == ’sound designer’
no?

Sound Designer is the correct title. I’ve done some sound design in the past. New sounds can be recorded (ideally) or purchased individually (if necessary) from a number of different sources. http://www.sounddogs.com is one company I remember from past work. They offer access to some excellent sound effect libraries. Feel free to contact me with more questions.

Hi Andy, I’m an Graphic Designer, my recent work is mostly on video production, but I’m about to launch my first app at appstore. I’m not a coder at all, but I’m working in a partnership with a programmer. I’m in Brazil. We think join forces (from two so different areas) is the best way in this appstore new model of business. If you were happy with your graphics designer & sound designer, could you post an update about your experience? I’m also interested in what you may have learned about specifying what you needed.
